The truth of the matter is that this country doesn’t usually suffer from winters anywhere near as harsh as some of our European neighbours. That’s not to say that we don’t encounter adverse winter driving conditions in the UK, though, particularly in outlying rural areas, some of which can easily be cut off when snow wreaks its occasional havoc. There are those who rely on a four-wheel-drive car when these circumstances arise, particularly in locations where gritting lorries don’t operate. The key to safe motoring in icy, snowy conditions is traction and grip. Having plenty of grip means the car will obediently stick to the road when you’re moving, and having good traction allows you to actually get moving in the first place, with the engine’s power being applied to the road effectively. Four-wheel drive is a definite advantage when the roads get slippery, and if you’re buying an SUV for this reason, make sure it actually does have four-wheel drive. Not all do – the Peugeot 3008, for example, is front-wheel-drive only, while the Renault Kadjar only has it as an optional extra. When four-wheel drive is optional, it tends to add around £1,500 to a car’s purchase price and usually also reduces fuel efficiency by 5-10%, increasing running costs. You may find that, rather than a big, bulky SUV, you’d rather have a compact hatchback or estate and many of these are now available with four-wheel drive for greater grip. Our list covers 10 cars we’d like to be behind the wheel of if the roads turn tricky. Dacia Duster SUV Dacia Duster SUV The Dacia Duster is one of the best value cars you can buy in the UK today, and is certainly the most affordable SUV you can buy. The Duster has more to offer than just a sub-£10,000 starting price, though: it’s comfortable, easy to drive and – when ordered with four-wheel drive – is a pretty capable off-roader that should definitely see you right on slippery and leaf-littered roads. The Duster is a spacious, practical car and there’s bound to be a version to suit your needs. If you’re looking for a basic all-terrain workhorse, the entry-level Access is as basic as cars come – even a radio is optional. If you’d like a little luxury, though, even the well-equipped Laureate trim is a lot less expensive than its looks and specifications suggest. Read more. Key points 4.2 / 5 Read Review Watch Video BMW 3 Series Touring estate BMW 3 Series Touring estate We regard the BMW 3 Series as one of the best cars on sale in the UK and the Touring estate adds practicality. In truth, its 495-litre boot isn't the biggest out there, but it's far more versatile than the saloon. Elsewhere, it offers the same extremely strong all-round package, combining a great driving experience, stylish looks and a beautifully finished interior – all backed up by that desirable blue-and-white badge. The 3 Series is more expensive than comparable cars like the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat, but it’s better to drive than almost all rivals – be it on a motorway cruise or a twisting back road. The Touring offers a huge range of engine and trim choices and those who regularly encounter wintry conditions will find BMW’s xDrive four-wheel-drive system fits the bill. You can combine it with a variety of petrol and diesel engines, but it does add a fair chunk to the price. The extra weight and mechanical drag of system increases fuel consumption, too, but this may be a sacrifice worth making for extra security on slippery roads. Read more. Key points 4.4 / 5 Read Review Watch Video Skoda Octavia Scout estate Skoda Octavia Scout estate The Skoda Octavia Estate is a remarkably competent all-rounder; a car that delivers a lot of space and practicality for a relatively modest outlay. It tends to be dependable, too – it’s common to see examples operated by taxi companies that have racked up enormous mileages. Building on its broad range of talents is the Skoda Octavia Scout, which adds four-wheel drive and slightly raised suspension for extra grip and reassurance, plus additional ground clearance for dealing with rough roads. Like any Octavia, it’s well built, spacious and stylish, while it’s also pretty economical for a four-wheel-drive car. There’s a choice of two diesels: both have a towing capacity of 2,000kg and neither feels sluggish. The only downside is that the standard Octavia offers such good value and low running costs that the Octavia Scout seems expensive in comparison to the regular version, which can also be chosen with four-wheel drive. However, many will see the Scout's individual looks and character as worth extra outlay. Read more. Key points 4.3 / 5 Read Review Watch Video Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV The Land Rover Freelander firmly established the famous British maker of all-conquering off-roaders as a big player in the compact SUV field and the Discovery Sport takes its hugely successful formula and runs with it. Like every other car to bear the Land Rover name, the Discovery Sport is capable on the rough stuff, but feels at home on tarmac, too. And it's here that many owners will find the Discovery Sport's selectable four-wheel drive comes into its own. Traction and grip are assured by big, wide tyres, making winter driving far less of a challenge. But it's the 'terrain response' system that enables the Discovery Sport to tackle roads that many rivals would find unpassable. It has separate modes for mud and snow, and knows exactly how much power to apply to keep you moving in the trickiest conditions. Combine this ability with good looks, a family-friendly interior and 57.7mpg fuel economy from the 148bhp diesel engine, and the Discovery Sport is a potent SUV package. Read more. Key points 4 / 5 Read Review Watch Video Subaru Outback estate Subaru Outback estate Not everyone who regularly encounters poor driving conditions wants an SUV and Subaru has been serving this audience for decades. Since the 1970s – when Subarus were first sold through agricultural equipment suppliers – four-wheel drive has been a brand trademark and it adds to the Outback's unique appeal. This is a large, practical estate, with a well built (if rather plain) interior, which can negotiate rough roads and keep going in wintry conditions like few other cars. You can choose a characterful flat-four 2.5-litre engine, but it's thirsty and not especially powerful, so the 2.0-litre diesel is a better bet; it can return over 50mpg and is a little quieter on the road. While the Outback's slightly high-set posture means it can't match more traditional estate cars for responsive handling and resistance to body lean, it's far less likely to be caught napping when the weather turns nasty. For those who come to depend on the Outback's ability to deal with rough road conditions, a slightly dull design ceases to matter on a car whose reliability has been so well proven. Read more. Key points 3.6 / 5 Read Review Watch Video Audi TT coupe Audi TT coupe It may seem odd to include a sports car on this list, but the Audi TT can be ordered with Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system, which means you’ll find it easier to stay in control in slippery conditions than with rivals like the Porsche Cayman. Audi has built up a reputation for making cars with exquisite interiors and the latest TT continues this trend: it simply oozes quality inside. Audi’s latest 12.3-inch ‘virtual cockpit’ dashboard display is truly exceptional, and it’s likely to set the trend for carmakers in years to come. The TT is available with a wide range of engines, culminating in the 306bhp TTS. You can even combine performance and economy – the Ultra diesel model manages a 0-62mph time of just 7.1 seconds, yet is capable of more than 60mpg. The TT is one of the best all-weather sports cars ever. Read more. Key points 4.1 / 5 Read Review Watch Video Suzuki Swift hatchback Suzuki Swift hatchback If you need to be able to stay on the road in inclement weather, but don’t have the budget for a Range Rover, the Suzuki Swift could be the ideal solution. Thanks to its ALLGRIP system, the Swift is one of the only superminis on sale in the UK with four-wheel drive. Because of its premium status, you have to go for the top SZ5 trim to enjoy all-wheel traction, but this also nets you features like sat nav and autonomous emergency braking to help avoid collisions. While four-wheel drive increases running costs slightly, the ALLGRIP model still returns up to 62.8mpg and only emits 101g/km of CO2, making it one of the cheapest cars to run on this list. Power comes from a 1.2-litre petrol engine with 89bhp, propelling the Swift from 0-62mph in 12.6 seconds and on to 106mph. Economy is aided by a ‘mild hybrid’ system that stores energy in a small battery as you slow down and then uses it to power the car’s electrics and boost acceleration. Read more. Key points 3.6 / 5 Read Review Watch Video Fiat Panda 4x4 hatchback Fiat Panda 4x4 hatchback The Fiat Panda 4x4 is comparable to the Dacia Duster in some way thanks to its low price and decent off-road credentials, but it’s actually a very different car. The Panda 4x4 is smaller than the Duster and more obviously sold on image – it’s a more style-led car inside and out. It’s more than just a pretty face, though – despite the limitations of its small size, the Panda 4x4 is impressively practical thanks to clever design touches and interior storage solutions. Fiat offers the Panda with its tiny TwinAir petrol engine, but while it’s efficient on paper, in the real world it needs to be worked hard and fuel economy suffers as a result. We recommend choosing the Panda 4x4 with a diesel engine, as this makes it more enjoyable to drive and more economical. And despite its small size and hatchback origins, the Panda 4x4 is surprisingly capable off-road, too, where its compact nature has benefits in agility. Read more. Key points 3.2 / 5 Read Review Watch Video Jeep Renegade SUV Jeep Renegade SUV Aside from the Jeep Wrangler – a direct descendent of the wartime Willys Jeep – the Jeep Renegade is arguably the most iconically styled car you can buy from the North American four-wheel-drive legend. From its vertical seven-bar front grille to tail-lights designed to resemble 'jerry cans', the Renegade is a very distinctive car indeed – on the outside, anyway. Inside, it's a bit plasticky and lacks the style of the exterior, but it makes up for this with loads of interior room for a car that takes up such little space on the road. It also boasts versatile features such as a front passenger seat that folds forward for the longest of through-loads. In truth, the Renegade isn't quite as sure-footed on the road as many of its small SUV rivals, but the opposite is true when conditions turn tricky – a typical Jeep four-wheel-drive system brings traction on loose or slippery surfaces and if the road disappears altogether, the Jeep can often just keep going. It's a great car for winter weather, and in Trailhawk trim can wade through almost 50cm of water, meaning floods won't necessarily stop it, either. Read more. Key points 3.3 / 5 Read Review Watch Video SsangYong Tivoli SUV SsangYong Tivoli SUV SsangYong is a South Korean carmaker whose name isn't quite as well known as some, but as it made its name building tough and reliable army trucks, the SUVs it builds today can deal with the worst a British winter can throw at them. The Tivoli is the smallest model the company offers in the UK, as well as one of the best, with smart, modern looks and an impressively well finished interior. Looks-wise, it falls somewhere between SUV and large hatchback, and its bulky shape conceals a spacious interior and a boot bigger than most rivals. The Tivoli really shows what it's made of if you choose the four-wheel-drive option – a feature that'll appeal to those who live in isolated rural areas and regularly face challenging roads. This option reduces fuel economy from the 1.6-litre diesel engine to below 48mpg, but it may be a compromise worth making to maximise mobility through snow and ice. Read more. Valtteri Bottas led the way with a lap of 1:20.270 with a short run on the soft tyres to dislodge McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne from top spot. Vandoorne's time, 1:20.325, was a flying lap faster than anything McLaren produced a year ago across the eight days of running at the Circuit de Catalunya. Follow live commentary of testing Check out our live blog for the latest updates and news from the pre-season action However, Vandoorne's flier was registered on the hypersoft tyres, the quickest compound in Pirelli's 2018 portfolio, and on a three-lap run. Unusually cold conditions in Barcelona severely restricted running with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, making his first appearance, limited to just five laps in the opening three hours. A longer run at the end of the morning ended with him setting the third-quickest lap, 0.740s off the pace. A fuel leak struck Max Verstappen's Red Bull and restricted the Dutchman to one installation lap. Unable to set representative lap times, many of the teams focused their work on aero evaluations with a range of garish sensors on the cars. Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica are both scheduled to run this afternoon. Could the test be extended? The cold Barcelona weather - and the forecast of more to come - has prompted discussions about the feasibility of extending the test to Friday. However, despite support from some teams, a schedule shift appears unlikely given Williams have already booked the circuit for a filming and sponsor day on Friday and all 10 teams would have to agree to an extra day. "We haven't been officially asked about Friday," Claire Williams told reporters. "I know there have been some conversations about potentially extending the test because of the weather. Yesterday afternoon was quite difficult for all teams to get some decent track running but today we've got clear skies, although it's a little cold. "We need to see how the next few hours evolve and come back and have the conversation about it. I don't think every team is there lobbying for the test to continue as far as I'm aware. There are a few teams that would like it to continue but we do have a scheduled filming day, we have booked the circuit and that's important to us. "I know Ferrari have the same scheduled on Saturday so maybe if that was the general consensus, people wanted to extend the test, we look at a day extending it into next week." The Sky Sports F1 Digital team will be providing live commentary from dawn until dusk for all days of winter testing while Sky Sports News HQ will also deliver live updates from trackside. For what it’s worth, the Oxford English Dictionary reckons a sports car is “designed for performance at high speeds,” but we’d argue that ignores a fairly major aspect of sports car ownership: enjoyment. Sports cars should be fast, but they should also put a big grin on your face every time you drive them. They tend to be less practical and more expensive than family hatchbacks, for example, so those deficits need compensating for; pure driving pleasure is surely one of the most significant carrots that sports cars dangle in front of potential buyers. We’ve tried to focus on those that could be used every day, so there aren't any super-light track specials allowed, and on cars that could loosely be described as 'affordable', as opposed to the preserve of millionaires. Sports cars aren't intrinsically impractical, with improvements in packaging and design meaning sports-car boots are far more useable than they used to be. It’s a similar story with fuel economy, as most of the cars on this list use the latest engine technology to offer reasonable running costs. If you like the sounds of the cars on this list that let you feel the the wind in your hair, head over to our top 10 list of the best convertibles, as many of the cars on this list are also offered with a folding roof. Those who want driver thrills but still need their cars to offer five seats and a useable boot, meanwhile, should look at our recommendations for the best hot hatchbacks on sale right now. Mazda MX-5 RF convertible Mazda MX-5 RF convertible Now in its fourth generation, the Mazda MX-5 has been a cornerstone of the sports car market for over 25 years. The latest model is one of the finest examples of the breed, with its lightweight construction, eager engines and fantastic handling making it one of the best driver’s cars on sale at any price. In standard soft-top form, the MX-5 offers a good balance of sporty appeal and day-to-day practicality (although luggage space is limited), but it’s at its most civilised in RF (Retractable Fastback) format. This brings a folding hard-top that makes it quieter inside and also leaves you less exposed to the elements than in the full convertible. It’s set up to be more of a cruiser than the standard car, but the RF remains a sharp and exciting car to drive – it’s best fitted with the larger, 158bhp 2.0-litre engine to deal with the extra weight. Key points 4.2 / 5 Price £22,295 - £29,495 Read Review Watch Video Mazda MX-5 roadster Mazda MX-5 roadster The Mazda MX-5 follows a traditional recipe for sports car success with excellent results. The fundamental design principle is to produce a balanced car; keeping the weight down and evenly distributed across the car. The 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre engines available produce 129 and 158bhp respectively, and while these are small numbers relative to most other modern performance cars, the MX-5 never feels underpowered. Agile, quick and great value-for-money, the MX-5 is fun at even modest speeds, rather than a car that needs to be driven at licence-losing pace before you get anywhere near its limits. Read more. Key points 4.2 / 5 Price £20,495 - £25,595 Read Review Watch Video Toyota GT 86 coupe Toyota GT 86 coupe The GT 86 is a real enthusiast’s choice and one of the few modern cars that favours handling balance and driver involvement over brute power. It’s not slow – a reliable 197bhp 2.0-litre engine is more than enough – and the low driving position, traditional rear-wheel-drive layout and view down that long bonnet endear it to old-school sports car fans. While many carmakers are fitting hugely powerful engines to their sports cars, Toyota is to be praised for taking a different route with the GT 86. Believe it or not, it comes with the same size tyres as the oh-so-sensible Prius hybrid, but this only improves matters in the GT 86: it makes the driving experience pin-sharp and bestows the car with just the right amount of grip. Things are rather less appealing inside, as the dashboard is uninspiring and features fairly run-of-the-mill materials, but that’ll be the last thing on your mind on a challenging country road. The Subaru BRZ is more or less identical save for badging and paint options, but the GT 86 benefits from a larger network of dealers and slightly better residual values. Read more. A 197bhp 2.0-litre engine feels noteworthy for its lack of a turbocharger, meaning it revs and pulls like sports cars did 'in the good old days' and the slick gearchange is a perfect match. Factor in gloriously accurate and communicative steering, plus a well judged suspension setup and the BRZ really is a great choice if you enjoy driving. The BRZ is by no means flawless – the interior isn't the best in terms of quality, for one thing – but the areas in which you have to compromise will be acceptable to those who want a car that's fun to drive and doesn't cost the earth. That bold front grille conceals a range of turbocharged engines that offer impressive power, while the diesels boast low running costs. Driver involvement is better than ever, with precise steering and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit putting you in the centre of the action. Choose the ‘Ultra’ diesel model if you’re after ultimate economy, the 395bhp TT RS if you’ve deep pockets and want a junior supercar, or the punchy 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine for something in between. Adding Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system will give you an extra dose of reassuring grip for about £1,500. A stylish, high-quality interior allied with much improved ride quality makes long journeys easy, too. This is the best TT ever – never has sports-coupe motoring looked so easy. Read more. With 168bhp, 0-62mph takes 6.8 seconds and the car gets a limited-slip differential to help it deploy the extra power in corners without losing grip. The Abarth is another small, lightweight, rear-wheel drive two-seater sports car on our list, and that’s because it delivers exactly the sort of driving fun you'd expect from a car with such properties. The handling is sharp, the exhaust note sounds great and the 138bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged engine is flexible and powerful enough for the car without making it expensive to run or scary to drive quickly. The car may not be the most practical, and tall people are likely to find the inside of the car fairly tight, but the Fiat 124 Spider is a very enjoyable all-round sports car nonetheless. Read more. It goes without saying that the M2 is a hoot to drive, but even the less exotic models can put a broad smile on your face, while the 218d returns around 65mpg. It’s a direct rival to the Audi TT and both should be experienced if you’re shopping at this price range. The BMW can count rear-wheel drive in its favour, although the TT’s interior has the 2 Series beaten when it comes to aesthetics. If you want four-wheel drive, go for BMW’s xDrive setup, but be aware this can only be added to the 220d. Read more. You can buy the car with either a 313bhp 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine or a 410bhp 5.0-litre V8, and the latter is our pick. It may cost more to run, but the V8 feels like a natural fit for an American muscle car, providing a lovely burble at low revs and an angry growl under hard acceleration. The V8 Mustang is capable of 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds but it’s not only good in a straight line. The combination of a more sophisticated suspension setup than previous Mustangs and the Performance Pack, which includes stiffer springs and upgraded brakes, means the Mustang stays much flatter through corners than before, and feels a lot quicker and more precise on a twisty road. TRUCK BED TENTS INFORMATION

Home » Automotive » Car Detailing Customization Join Sign in EzineArticles - Expert Authors Sharing Their Best Original Articles Custom Search Search Sherri Burris Basic Author | 1 Article Joined: December 29, 2017 United States Things to Consider When Using a Truck Bed Tent By Sherri Burris | Submitted On December 29, 2017 Recommend Article Article Comments Print Article These tents are durable and are usually available in nylon and polyurethane and also come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. They are mostly windproof as well as waterproof. A close cousin to the truck tent is the SUV tent. As the back of an SUV is already covered, these tents simply extend the useful living area by attaching to the back of the truck. You can then use the back of your truck for sleeping and the extended tent section attached to it as living and changing quarters. Truck tents are designed to cover the entire bed of your truck. They turn that wasted space into a convenient place to sleep. By using the bed of your pickup as your sleeping quarters you manage to stay off the ground which can be a tremendous comfort when an unexpected storm rolls through. Lightweight and designed to sleep 2 adults these tents are very spacious, even enough for 2 small children. These tents are mainly designed just for sleeping and storage. Mesh windows for proper ventilation are included and some even come with great accessories like a changing room, a soft foam mattress (that can be inflated and deflated at will), pillows, mosquito nets and even a ladder for those tents that sit on the top of the truck. Always remember to have your truck bed empty and clean, some tents have sewn floor and others don't. Those without a floor are easier to install and keep clean. A truck tent with a sewn in floor or a tent with no floor, truck tents are a wonderful travel accessory that breeds a race of travelers who don't mind spending a night in the middle of nowhere, preferring to get lost in the wilderness. Truck tents are the first choice amongst travelers who cherish their freedom. It is the best possible option if one wants to stop in the middle of a cross-country ride and camp anywhere one wants to. These tents give you the option to camp anywhere you would like. You have plenty of storage in you truck, the safety of your truck and freedom to camp anywhere that you will never experience with any other kind of tent. These days any type of tent is available for any make of the truck or SUV. Make sure that you check the tent size with the truck bed size, which will fit properly and not leave any room for any inconvenience. The Ford Ranger WildTrak is one of the highest selling pickups around the world without being in the USA. With the official website pushing the release way back to 2019 without much to go on, there’s just too much-suspended animation in the air. Especially for those who are stuck with Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado. Not that these machines are not worth it, they are worth every single penny and this is just an understatement. 2018 Ford Ranger WildTrak front 2018 Ford Ranger WildTrak – Platform and Design It will be interesting to see whether Ford will stick to the Ranger design dynamics as in the Aussie models or the similar ones around. But there are more than a few things which Ford needs to consider before re-invigorating a 2018 Ford Ranger WildTrak with a complete makeover. The first and foremost factor is identity. Before Ford captivated the market with its beastly Raptor series or its reliable workman F-150 models and the monstrous Super Duty models, the Ranger used to be the call of the day. It was the face of Ford’s idea of a pickup. So to cut a long story short, there are high chances that this new Ranger Wildtrak will continue the same design DNA overall. Stronger Front Fascia A stronger bolder front fascia to start with, the soft but muscular grille and fascia curves will be replaced by a more F-150 like design. Expect the 3-bar grille mesh to continue in this upcoming 2018 Ford Ranger WildTrak. Whether Ford will stick to Ranger headlights is a question worth waiting for but, it might just, otherwise this truck will end up looking like a younger sibling to the F-series. Bolder wheel-arches are an obvious addendum which can be expected. A heavier front bumper is another something which will obviously come up. And it will drop low like New-gen Ford trucks incorporating the fog lights therein. Other than these, the hood will remain the same, definitely not like the Super Duty models as this Ford Ranger WildTrak will not have those beastly engines inside. 2018 Ford Ranger WildTrak interior 2018 Ford Ranger WildTrak – More Power Under the Hood: This is one of those few things which can be guaranteed and warranted with closed eyes and tied hands. The upcoming new pickup will apparently have a new set of engines. The 2.2L and 3.2 units currently running it. This model is expected to get a minor 2% to 3% HP increase. But it will get quite an increase in its torque, at least 5%. And all of this will be done to make sure that this upcoming 2018 Ford Ranger WildTrak will be a mid-duty performance tweaked pickup, a somewhat first of its kind. 2018 Ford Ranger WildTrak side 2018 Ford Ranger WildTrak – Price and Expected Release Date This 2018 Ford Ranger WildTrak will come in prices that will be above the $40,000 (American dollars) bracket. And even if Ford says it’s going to hit the showrooms in and around 2019, a late 2018 show-stopper is on the cards and this is good a spoiler as anyone can get. FOUR NEW JAGUAR CARS FOR 2018

Speaking to Autocar, Adrian Hallmark promised that Jaguar would break out of its also-ran status in the global premium car market when it launches its new compact saloon in 2015, and will “build the most advanced, most efficient, most refined car in that segment. Not almost as good as, but better than the best in the world”. He added: “It will look and drive like a Jaguar, be filled with the highest technology that anyone has ever brought to that segment, and have the most efficient engines and the most refined feel in its class.” Codenamed X760, the new all-aluminium saloon will be joined by an estate and an SUV (smaller than the recently unveiled C-X17 concept). It’s thought that there are also outline plans for a coupĂ© variant and possibly a hatchback in the style of BMW’s GT models. According to a JLR executive quoted by automotive analysts in a recent Bernstein Research report, the new baby Jaguar project is the brand’s last chance. “This is the only choice as Jaguar is not viable at 60,000 units [per year]. If the X760 fails, it will be probably be the end for the brand.” However, all the signs are that the baby Jaguar project will not be a failure, especially as its financial viability will be propped up by the production of a new Range Rover Evoque XL, based on the same aluminium architecture as the Jaguar models. The Evoque XL will add much-needed volume and healthy profit margins. The compact premium segment that Jaguar wants to break into is set to grow by another half a million sales by the end of the decade. According to figures from London-based analyst ISI Auto, the global market for compact premium cars is currently dominated by the three German premium brands. Between them, the BMW 3-series family, Mercedes-Benz C-class and Audi A4 are expected to sell 1.15 million units next year, the majority of the total market segment sales of 1.3 million. These figures show the huge uphill struggle that has faced Japanese premium brands Lexus and Infiniti, but they also provide hope for Jaguar. While Japanese brands and Cadillac could account for just 147,000 sales globally next year in this segment, Jaguar’s arrival in 2015 could finally shake it up. If Jaguar could steal just five per cent of sales, it would hit 80,000 units for the new saloon and estate. In the medium term, Jaguar could also launch a compact coupĂ©, which could edge the road car family towards six-figure sales. Of course, X761, the Jaguar SUV — which, in production form, will be sized to compete with the BMW X3 and X4 — will add further volume. Bernstein analysts think that X761 should achieve sales of about 50,000 units per year. That would mean total production volumes of 130,000 for small Jaguars in the medium term. Adding the Evoque XL, at 80,000 units, would give the new Solihull production line healthy annual output of over 200,000 units. The longer-term aims for the small Jaguar are enhanced by ISI Auto estimates, which suggest that the global compact premium market will increase by another 400,000 units by 2020 to 1.7 million units, a 30 per cent rise on the expected 2014 total. This sector is both ultra-competitive and dominated by three well established German rivals. However, Jaguar bosses think that they will hit their sales targets because of three major engineering advantages. First, the compact Jaguar will be made entirely of aluminium, giving it a decisive lead in weight saving. Second, the rear-drive running gear has been designed from scratch to allow the Jaguar to be given extremely precise handling characteristics. Third, the Jaguars will be launched with a new range of JLR-designed, state-of-the-art, powerful and super-frugal engines. The compact Jaguar could hardly be better prepared for breaking into the compact premium market. The only possible variable is the styling, but Jaguar design director Ian Callum and his team are pushing at an open door, considering the relative conservatism and familiarity of the current 3-series. X760 is set to arrive in early 2015 (after appearing in showroom guise at the Paris show in September next year), which will be around the same time as the all-new C-class and shortly before the new A4. The estate is expected in early 2016, followed a short time later by the SUV. If the X760 project goes well, a two-door coupĂ© version could be in showrooms in 2018, around the same time as the saloon will get a light refresh. Senior JLR engineers have told Autocar that the compact Jaguar will have an emphasis on handling, following in the footsteps of the more focused F-type and recent racier versions of the XF. The combination of details such as aluminium suspension components and a very stiff aluminium structure (which is both riveted and bonded) provide, on paper, an ideal basis for a car that is more driver focused than the 3-series and more technically advanced than the A4. According to Kevin Stride, a Jaguar vehicle line director, the new Jaguar architecture has been engineered from scratch to allow not only the proportions and low-bonnet look desired by the design team but also double wishbone front suspension, which should help to deliver optimum steering precision. Work on the new Jaguar architecture began in early 2010. “We started planning our future portfolio and which markets we wanted to go into, so we needed to know what architecture we needed,” said Stride. “The most important thing was to grow the brand with genuinely appealing products — authentic, genuine Jaguars.” Stride says it took “many, many hours to choose the way we went, but we’re very confident [the new architecture] will deliver the ride, refinement, the luxury, plus the agility, the steering connection feel. “We’ve been learning loads over the last few years with F-type, about what makes the right level of steering precision. So with the [platform’s] front upright, for example, we know precisely the way in which you need to measure its stiffness to contribute to a steering feel that feels a bit like an F-type, even though there are probably 200 engineering measures from that point to when you’re holding the wheel and more. “We selected a suspension architecture that, whichever the classes of cars that we’re even thinking about, we know we’ll deliver an uncompromised product in that class. Not everybody has that luxury.” The X760 project is in stark contrast to the previous two occasions on which Jaguar has tried to break into German-dominated markets. The 1998 S-type was based on a cheaply engineered, US-sourced Lincoln platform, which proved inadequate against the BMW 5-series, as did its retro styling. The 2001 X-type was based on a beefed-up version of the original Mondeo platform, but it also suffered conservative styling as well as a lack of diesel engines and, initially, alternative body styles. However, this time Jaguar is coming at the compact premium market with a complete bespoke and freshly engineered car. It is surely Jaguar’s best and last chance to become a true global player. Er, that really worked out well with the F type, didn't it? Still, best of luck to them. Log In Or Register To Post Comments RCT V Significant “make-or-break” new “Junior executive” Jaguar "760" 14 October 2013 AUTOCAR reports that (only) . . . “If the Jaguar "760" project goes well, a two-door coupe version could be in the showrooms in 2018”. Could the Jaguar company do any more to publicise, display, its - lack of - confidence in such an important and significant “make-or-break” new “Junior executive” model, than to qualify the future launch schedule of variants before the “lead” model is even introduced? We could/would/should expect to get the two-door coupe variant, at the same time as when all the model variants are introduced. Is moving the B-piller that difficult - with “merely” a shorter rear ¾ panel and longer door?! We know that they developed the F-Type coupe in parallel with the recently launched open convertible, to ensure that one model did not compromise the (subsequent) development of a further variant. How much more difficult would it be to develop and engineer all “760” variants at the same time with them all on the “drawing board” together? + + + + + + It is to be hoped that the "760" four-door “saloon”, will provide suitable and appropriate rear-seat accommodation levels, when compared to the German competition. When the “road-warriors” all pile into their Jaguar "760" on the way to the pub after the interminable Friday “Sales Meeting”, the “designated driver” will still enjoy the same spacious environment behind the steering wheel as they do during the rest of the week. However, the two colleagues relegated to the rear seats of the "760", are going to find their comfort levels seriously compromised - according to the sneak previews and artists impressions of the “four-door-coupe” like "760"; and the empirical evidence of the already existing “four-door-coupe” XF, and the already existing “four-door-coupe” XJ. (Unfortunately, every one was able to witness the inelegant entry of the bride’s family into the rear of their XJ, the morning after the wedding of the future King of England!). Further, to state that the whole future of Jaguar depends upon the success of the "760", is a little unfair, unrealistic, and displays a woeful ignorance of the potential yet to be exploited that is contained within the existing models, such as the existing “four-door-coupe” XF, and the existing “four-door-coupe” XJ, and their meagre sales figures - when compared to the German opposition. We were promised proper, conventionally proportioned, four-door “saloon” versions of the “four-door-coupe” XF, and the “four-door-coupe” XJ, before they were introduced. We are still waiting! All those designers “beavering-away” in Whitley’s “Geoff Lawson design centre”, must be able to produce a conventionally proportioned, four-door “saloon” version of the“four-door-coupe” XF, and the “four-door-coupe” XJ - that allows/offers appropriate levels of rear seat headroom with associated ease of entry/egress, for the Executive market segment, and the Luxury market segment. The meagre, limited, sales volumes of the“four-door-coupe” XF, and the “four-door-coupe” XJ, demonstrably confirm that there is something fundamentally wrong with the present product offering, when compared to the German competition. + + + + + + Two smaller suggestions could be introduced immediately - even if only as customer “options” - without actually committing the company to standardising the proposals, and which would undoubtedly widen the appeal to potential customers, of even the existing “four-door-coupe” XF, and the existing “four-door-coupe” XJ. 1. Offer the XJ customer, and the XF sportbrake (estate) customer, the sensible option of having their respective models’ “C-piller” finished in matching body colour to the rest of the vehicle - instead of the confusing, affected, exaggerated, pretentious, blacked-out surround of the rear windscreen. 2. Offer the XF customer the option of having the whole facia of the existing “four-door-coupe” XF, to be available in (various) wood veneers, rather that the ubiquitous “Knurled Aluminium” which really is (still !) trying too hard to be “young and trendy”. + + + + + + It is hoped that Jaguar would accept all the above suggestions as positive and constructive. However, from previous experience it is evident that the company is afflicted by the dismissive malady often referred to as “not invented here”. All these non-stories will not make Jaguar sell cars. Remember the XF, XJ and F-Type were all planned to be the best, but lack of fundng meant huge compromises. Until we see the end of the decades-old underpinnings of the current generation of cars, then the "light weight" philosophy cannot be fully demonstrated... Log In Or Register To Post Comments GeToD Wishful thinking or... 14 October 2013 The marketing hype is in full swing. I do hope this is not another case of overpromise and underdeliver. Witness the light weight aluminum construction of the F-type, 680 pounds heavier than the competition, 20 K more expensive with a joke for the boot. They are planning to better the compeition but remember that the competition is not resting on its laurels, continually improving their already excellent product range whereas JLR is playing catch-up (again). The projected sales may tremendously important for JLR but in comparison to the quoted global market it is peanuts. Most people would be more impressed if for once the hype was restrained and they overdeliver, establishing some credibility. And then we would not have to put up the English press glossing over the weaknesses of the product...... and thereupon complaining about an anti-JLR bias reaction. GeToD Log In Or Register To Post Comments DenTarthurdent Always copying, never bettering 14 October 2013 "Senior JLR engineers have told Autocar that the compact Jaguar will have an emphasis on handling, following in the footsteps of the more focused F-type and recent racier versions of the XF." So, it will ride like an unsprung cart. Again. They ruined the F Type by aiming at the 911 (a dreadful thing in a different sector, whatever the muttering rotters say) and now they're going to aim at the 3 series/C class. Probably benchmarking the M3. Do better! Don't take somebody else's lousy benchmarks, don't go to the bloody Nurburgring, if you build a car that doesn't rattle your teeth out on the dire surfaces of the M25, you'll sell millions. RCT V understands what people want better than Jaguar do. Snowclone - XF was mostly XK underpinnings if Callum is to be believed. HOW AND WHEN TO FLUSH A CAR ENGINE IN NEW AND OLD AUTOS

Home » Automotive » Repairs Join Sign in EzineArticles - Expert Authors Sharing Their Best Original Articles Custom Search Search George Christ Basic PLUS Author | 23 Articles Joined: November 30, 2008 United States Should You Flush Your Engine When Having a Running or Performance Problem? By George Christ | Submitted On December 25, 2017 Recommend Article Article Comments Print Article Expert Author George Christ When you change your dirty oil for new, a layer of sticky, acidic residue remains behind. They are waiting to cause trouble! As these layers of film build up in equipment and car engines, they bog-down their normally snappy movement. They also are causing over 20 running and performance problems. This includes loss of power, valve tapping, oil burning blow-by, and possible faster wear out of key internal parts. They can shut your motor down! Cleaning is the remedy! Traditional methods to clean your motor to end such problems are: Have your motor taken apart and cleaned. This usually includes replacement of half-worn or worn parts. This is the most expensive method; often costing $2000 to $5000. It is obviously the best method. Machine engine flushes. This method sounds good, but is quickly falling into disfavor. Harm results from cleaning solvents used. Harm occurs as a flush machine sends solvents throughout your motor under pressure, striping away residue - which drains out in the rinse process. Part stores also sell solvent based engine flushes for do-it-yourselfers to clean their motor. Sounds good, right? Not so! With a bit of solvent still present and oil removed from the surfaces of your pistons, bearings, valves, gears, etc., by the solvent, a momentary metal-to-metal contact friction occurs. The lack of fresh oil on dry pistons, bearings, crank shaft, and gears creates a temporary metal-to-metal grinding, and faster wearing surface on them. That is where harm is occurring. If using this method the following cautions should apply. Do not raise the speed of the engine up until oil circulation is assured, or engine damage can occur. Let the motor start and remain at idle speed for several minutes. Drive at slower speeds for a few miles to let normal oiling resume. New, safe products to clean engines and transmissions, avoid those internal harm problems. Chemistry and science are offering new products that clean your motor as-your-drive. Some offer what could be called a safe, holistic cleaning method. Brands providing these new, safe cleaners advertise, they do-not contain solvents! Some brands use bio-cleaners from plants. Others are mostly chemical in nature. As a mechanic, I favor the holistic chemical-based brands offering to clean both top fuel-side and oiling-side of your motor to rid all the motor of power and residue deterring films. They are holistic in that they also include anti-wear, friction reduction, and an ability to hold sludge removed in the oil fluid, to be drained or filtered out. But, they also add lube-aids to every surface called metal surface conditioners. They are the better engine cleaners. They may advertise to solve a greater array of dirty engine caused problems, too! With anti-wear, and superior cleaning features, plus longer engine life advantages, they provide extra benefits for your car and budget. Those are the ways to clean and have your motor returned to a clean, better operating condition. Some motorist prefer the total-overhaul type of remedy. Others, on a budget, look for shortcuts, and a lower-cost way to handle internal engine problems. As new products appear, these will replace old methods with a new twist. Look for those that offer better, safer cleaning results. Those that work while you drive. Look for those brands offering to clean an end your loss of power, valve tapping, oil burning blow-by, and end faster wear out of key internal parts. They may offer you faster, cheaper and longer car life advantages, also - good for all engines, not just residue and sludge trouble-caused ones. CAR OIL DIFFERENCES YOU NEED TO KNOW

Home » Automotive » Repairs Join Sign in EzineArticles - Expert Authors Sharing Their Best Original Articles Custom Search Search Danish Malik Basic PLUS Author | 24 Articles Joined: November 3, 2014 India Different Types of Car Oils You Must Know About By Danish Malik | Submitted On February 06, 2018 Recommend Article Article Comments Print Article Expert Author Danish Malik More often than not, an automobile engine comprises of numerous moving parts, each of which rubs against the other to create both, friction and heat. In order for the parts to keep working seamlessly, it is essential that this friction is reduced, and any sort of overheating is avoided. This task is best done by oil, which keeps the engines well-lubricated and absorbs any excessive heat. Given that car oils are available in different types, as a car owner, it is in your best interest that you have a fair knowledge about them so that car maintenance becomes as effortless an exercise as possible for you. Premium Oil This is the conventional oil that is available in different levels of viscosity. This type of oil is largely used in light-duty vehicles, and needs to be changed/replaced once in every 4 months, or at least twice a year. It is highly recommended that the oil is changed as soon as the oil-change indicator in the car lights up. Synthetic Oil This type of oil is specially formulated for sophisticated engines, such as those found in Mercedes-Benz. They promise a high degree of performance in aspects such as protection against deposits and viscosity index. They are considerably expensive than the conventional oils but are completely worth the money spent on them as they perform well across a wide range of temperatures. Synthetic Blend Oil As the name suggests, synthetic blend oil consists of a dash of synthetic mixed with the conventional oil. This type of oil is formulated with the aim to offer protection to vehicles enduring heavy loads and/or working in high temperatures, especially SUVs. Given that the synthetic blend oil doesn't evaporate as easily, they reduce the loss of oil and increase fuel efficiency. Yet another benefit of this is that it costs much less than fully synthetic. Now that you have a clear picture regarding the various types of car oils available, you must also understand that changing your car oil will require an oil-filter. Like everything else, even the oil-filter you chose must be based on the recommendation of your car maker. That being said, you must ensure that the filter you pick for your car isn't oversized, or else make sure that you fill sufficient oil for it to function flawlessly. Just in case, you're still unsure of which type of oil or oil filter you ought to use, feel free to get in touch with a reputable car service centre, and the experts in there will be happy to help. HOW TO FIX CAR CLUTCH PROBLEMS STIFF CLUTCH

Home » Automotive » Repairs Join Sign in EzineArticles - Expert Authors Sharing Their Best Original Articles Custom Search Search Paresh Gordhan Basic PLUS Author | 43 Articles Joined: December 1, 2010 South Africa Clutch Kit: Why Is My Clutch Stiff? By Paresh Gordhan | Submitted On February 06, 2018 Recommend Article Article Comments Print Article Expert Author Paresh Gordhan The clutch of a car is what makes a manual transmission function. The clutch gets compressed so that the driver can change gears thus increasing speed. Sometimes the clutch will have problems that could cause it to be stiff. Stiffness of the clutch can be uncomfortable whilst driving because the harder it is to press down on it, the more strength you would need. Here are some of the reasons why the clutch is stiff: Damaged clutch cable: this cable needs to have maximum amount of tension for the push and pull motion. This cable is made from steel so that it will last for long periods of time. It assists with the process of changing gears by extending to disengage the clutch. Damaged master clutch cylinders: usually when a master cylinder is damaged it will leak. Leakage in the master cylinder releases liquid which means that it can no longer build the right amount of pressure. Air bubble in the hydraulic line: the hydraulic system can't have any air present because the system works with liquids such as oil, brake fluid and clutch fluid. This line assists with the transportation of the hydraulics to the different components. Misadjusted clutch linkage: Because the system works with very small tolerances, an error such as a misadjusted clutch linkage could be detrimental to your driving experience. A specific amount of force has to be used when applying the different pedals. It is this linkage which controls that force. Incorrect Components: not all clutch parts are compatible with the factory clutch kit already installed in your car. Compatible parts are important in a car's structure. Some systems will use different applications. Another problem that could cause a stiff or hard clutch is a worn throw out bearing, or clutch release bearing. This component applies pressure to the fingers of the pressure plate to allow the release of the clutch whilst spinning. You can easily detect this problem with a low rolling-like sound as well as the stiffness of the clutch pedal. A problem such as this should be checked and fixed immediately. This type of problem can go on for years and many people only react to it once it dramatically affects their driving. This could become a dangerous game especially if you do not know what the problem is with your car and you don't have a mechanic nearby.
