You hear strange sounds and experience strange occurrences. When something doesn't sound, look or feel right, get it checked - sooner rather than later. If you do suspect faulty brakes, this is what it could be? Vibrating Steering Wheel If your steering wheel vibrates while you are driving then there could be an issue with the brake drum or the rotor. It could also indicate a faulty steering mechanism or perhaps other loose components. This can affect your driving, so get it checked. Locking Brakes This is what you experience when the brakes lock when you apply light pressure. This can be a bit scary but the most likely reason for this may be that there is grease or oil on the brake linings. The worst case scenario might be that there are broken components and this could mean that the brakes would fail in an emergency situation. Low Pedal This is when the brake pedal is low and you have to press really deep for the brakes to activate. The brake pedal may touch the floor in such a case and this could be an issue. It is best to get the brakes checked soonest to identify the problem. Noisy Brakes If you hear a distant whistling or a type of squeaking noise then it could indicate that the brake pads or linings are worn. This is a warning sign that you need to respond to quickly. Sticking Brake Pedal If your brake pedal gets stuck when you try to apply pressure to it and it fails to release, it could mean that the master cylinder is faulty. This issue must not be left like this for too long because it can cause serious damage which could lead to expensive repairs and total brake failure. Car Pulls To One Side If your car pulls to one side when you apply the brakes this could be quite dangerous if you're driving in heavy traffic. This is, most likely, a brake issue but it could also be related to the tyre pressure. Rather check the brakes before you bump someone's car. Pulsating Brake Pedal A pulsing brake pedal is a concern because it could indicate that the brake disc or drums are out of true alignment. This situation could be dangerous in wet conditions but it could also lead to increased or uneven wear in the braking system. Spongy Pedal This occurs when the pedal feels spongy under your foot after heavy use. It could indicate that there is moisture in the brake fluid.
