Indeed, the Fiesta ST might look much like a regular hatchback at first glance, but a closer look reveals its sports styling with a rear spoiler, accentuated side skirts and a much firmer, tougher look on the road. Inside the engine bay, the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine throws out an extraordinary 180bhp with Ford’s accredited tuners, Mountune, offering an upgrade to a whopping 217bhp for those who really want to push the boat out. The only problem is, it’ll still be a Ford Fiesta. A little more badge cachet can be had with the Mini Cooper S, which has the option of a 2-litre four-cylinder turbo engine kicking out 189bhp and 206lb/ft of torque. Again, it’s a firm ride with switchable active dampers as an option, although a limited-slip differential isn’t included. Frankly, the 2-litre engine doesn’t feel like it has the kick of the previous Mini’s 1.6, which is pretty disappointing. The Fiesta and the Mini are both credible options, but the only problem is that they both still feel like hot hatches. They’re good, make no mistake about that, but there’s something missing. Enter Fiat’s 695 Biposto, manufactured under the sporty Abarth badge. They’re pitching it as ‘the world’s smallest supercar’, and at first glance it does seem as though that may be pushing it a little bit. Frankly, it looks like a Fiat 500 with side skirts and a spoiler. But appearances can be deceiving... As soon as you open the door in the Abarth you’re greeted by having to strap yourself into racing seats with four-point harnesses. There’s an H-patterned dog ring gearbox and the whole interior seems to be just slightly beyond what you’d find in any other hot hatch, making you feel like you’re sat in a real supercar. There’s only a 1.4-litre turbo under the bonnet, but that engine has come straight from Abarth’s Formula 4 single-seater series model. In short, it has a top speed of 143mph and will get to 60 in well under 6 seconds. The Abarth is nippy through the corners and the gearbox is superbly manufactured to make driving the car a breeze. For real racers, gear changes can be done without using the clutch, but crunching can ensue if you don’t know what you’re doing. One downside to the Abarth is that it’s not cheap. Prices start at £32,955 and you’ll be shelling out upwards of £50,000 for the top model. Quite a bit for a car that’s only available in one colour. The Fiesta ST, on the other hand, can be bought for as little as £17,250, with even the top model coming in at under £20,000. The Mini is a similar price, starting at £18,650 but rising to over £30,000 if you go for all the optional extras. Frankly, though, if money is an issue you probably shouldn’t be looking at cars with ‘super’ in the class name. For this reason alone, the Abarth wins it in our eyes. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW 1 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 chevy colorado zr2 The Chevy Colorado is the newest entrant in the mid-size truck category, and they are taking it by storm by offering a number of special editions that will appeal to all types of buyers. They've got the only diesel available in a mid-size truck and it gets best in class 22 city/30 hwy. New for 2017 is an off-road specific truck called the Colorado ZR2. It's aimed squarely at the Tacoma TRD and Raptor crowd. The ZR2 sports an upgraded suspension, wider wheelbase, locking front and rear differentials, as well as driver controlled traction control, which is vital for a true four-wheeler. The ZR2 will be available in all cab and engine configurations. Pricing and delivery dates have yet to be announced. 2 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro Toyota takes off-road capability seriously: From the first Land Cruisers to today's tough pickups, there has always been at least a handful of Toyotas that excel off the pavement. This year, Toyota has added a new TRD Pro option package to the 4Runner, Tacoma, and Tundra. Because of its size and flexy coil-link rear suspension, the may be the most capable of the bunch—and the best to drive on the street, too. Toyota's Trail package already comes with a locking rear differential and the company's excellent Crawl Control—essentially a cruise control for off road. With the TRD Pro package, the suspension is replaced with taller Eibach coils and remote reservoir Bilstein shocks. The new suspension allows for an extra inch of wheel travel at both ends. The 4Runner also gains ground clearance with taller 265/75R16 BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires wrapped around tough-looking faux beadlock wheels. All this makes the $36,410 4Runner TRD Pro one stout four-wheeler for not a lot of dough. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW 3 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Hard Rock Edition When a collection of hardcore off-road-duty parts came together in the TJ version of the Jeep Wrangler in 2003, it was as if every four-wheeler's dream list of components had been built into Jeep's most capable platform. And for more than a decade since, the Wrangler Rubicon has been the benchmark 4WD SUV. Today's Rubicon package adds hardware such as Dana 44 axles, a 4:1 transfer case for easy slow-speed crawling, and a swaybar disconnect system to free up the suspension when the Jeep needs additional suspension flex on the toughest trails. For 2015 there's a new Hard Rock version of the Rubicon that includes blacked-out trim, tough bumpers with removable end caps, red tow hooks and rock rails to protect the sides of body tub. Also for 2015, all Wranglers receive a new Torx tool kit that includes all the tools needed to remove roofs, doors, and those bumper cap ends. 4 Toyota Land Cruiser Few nameplates are as synonymous with off-roading as the Land Cruiser. And as Toyota's flagship SUV has grown in size, price, and amenities, the company has been careful to retain the big ute's talents for slogging through rough terrain. The Land Cruiser packs a mammoth 5.7-liter 381-hp V-8. To float over the worst trails, the Toyota uses plush-riding independent front and coil-long solid axle rear suspension engineered for increased articulation. The basis of that system comes from Toyota's Kinetic Dynamic Suspension, which automatically allows for more suspension movement in slow-speed, off-road conditions, then tighten up as it senses lean at higher road speeds. It's brilliant. Like the off-road 4Runner, the Land Cruiser also comes with Crawl Control. There's even a system that, when activated, brakes the outside rear wheel to tighten the vehicles' turning circle on a narrow trail. That's smart. However, this tech, along with the luxury of the Land Cruiser, comes with a steep price tag. It starts at just under $80,000. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW 5 Ram Power Wagon You may be looking at the most capable pickup truck available for 2015. Ram takes the Heavy Duty Ram truck's strengths, like its solid axles front and rear and coil-link suspension, and builds upon them for the Power Wagon. The suspension is slightly taller than a pedestrian Ram 2500. To increase articulation in the three-link front suspension, engineers developed a new high movement joint called Articulink. This joint allows more flex in the suspension to keep the tires on the ground in rough terrain. If that's not enough, simply press a button and the swaybar disconnects, freeing up more of the suspension. In particularly tricky or muddy spots, the Power Wagon's locking front and rear differentials can pull the truck through. In fact, with all these systems engaged, it's pretty tough to get this Ram stuck. But if you manage to do it, there's a Warn electric winch hidden behind the front bumper. The best bang for your buck would be the base Tradesman, which starts at just under $45,000. Remember, that money is also buying you a heavy-duty truck that can tow more than 10,000 pounds. 6 Ford Raptor When the Ford Raptor debuted in 2010, it was so radical and so good at high-speed desert four-wheeling that no production truck or SUV could catch it. That's still the case today. The stout 411-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 makes the Raptor so quick. But it's the suspension, wide track. and giant 35-inch tires that make this pickup so gifted in the dirt. The independent front and solid-axle rear suspension systems have been engineered to provide nearly a foot of wheel travel at each corner—double that of a normal pickup truck. That suspension remains supple at higher speeds thanks to the Fox Racing shocks. The Raptor might be Baja focused, but thanks to a locking rear differential and a Torsen limited-slip up front, the Raptor is nearly as capable for slow crawling as a Power Wagon. So what's the bad news? There's an all-new F-150 for 2015 and the Raptor isn't part of the lineup—yet. We hear a new Raptor is coming. But if you want one of the originals, the time is now. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW 7 Land Rover Range Rover Just one look at the Range Rover's sleek profile and posh interior and you'd want to classify this SUV as just another luxury vehicle. But the Range Rover has always been the flagship Land Rover, and as such, it must have serous off-road capability. The Range Rover's adjustable and long travel air suspension (10.2 inches up front and 12.2 inches in the rear) and its computer-controlled Terrain Response four-wheel drive system work in concert to perform incredible feats in the dirt. For serious trailwork, the Rover can rise up on its springs and provide a foot of ground clearance. Where some 4WD omit water fording in their suite of talents, Range Rover engineers have designed this SUV to cross water up to three feet deep. And the Rover has an aggressive 2.93:1 low-range gearing as well as an optional locking rear differential, so it can probably crawl over obstacles that would leave other luxury SUVs with their tires spinning. Speaking of spinning tires, opt for the 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 and you'll get a ridiculous 510 hp that can power the Range Rover to 60 mph in 5 seconds flat. Be prepared to pony up, though, as this beast starts at $84,000. 8 Ford Super Duty The Ford Raptor might be the best all-around 4WD vehicle that Ford makes. But for hardcore, slow-going four-wheeling that requires you to tow or haul a heavy payload, choose the Ford Super Duty. What's important here are the Ford's solid axles. Unlike most pickups (Ram Heavy Duty excluded) that use an independent front suspension for better street manners on their 4WD trucks, this Ford uses a solid beam axle for increased durability, axle articulation, and the ability to handle larger-than-stock tires. And with an electronically locking rear differential available as an option, the Super Duty can handle seriously tough terrain. This Ford packs an optional 6.7-liter diesel that cranks out 440 ph and an insane 860 lb-ft of torque. Even if you install a suspension lift and some beastly aftermarket tires, that diesel would have no problem. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW 9 Mercedes-Benz G500 Mercedes-Benz has a legendary reputation among 4WD fans because of two vehicles: The commercial-duty Unimog 4X4s they sell everywhere but in the U.S., and this vehicle, the G-Wagen. The G-Series Mercedes-Benz was developed for international armed forces in the 1970s; it exists today mostly unchanged from those roots. Sure, it's a modern Mercedes-Benz, and as such comes packed with luxury and technology. But beneath the leather, wood and radar cruise control, there's old-school body-on-frame construction and solid axles at each end of the chassis. If the list of hardcore parts ended here, the Benz would still make this list. But Mercedes-Benz provides each G-Wagen (even the 536-hp AMG model) with three electronically activated locking differentials. That's astonishing for a luxury vehicle—only the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Ram Power Wagon match that level of capability. The price of admission, though, is as steep as the hills this horse can conquer. A G500 starts at just under $115,000. 10 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the premiere vehicle in their lineup, and the Overland model promises to retain the Jeep 4x4 spirit by combining off-road prowess with excellent driveability and comfort. It comes standard with monochromatic paint and 18-inch wheels. The interior is packed with all the basics, and is gussied up with a leather-covered dashboard, ventilated/heated seats, and an Alpine sound system. Powered by a base 184-horsepower 2.4 liter four-cylinder or a 271-horsepower 3.2 liter V6, and a 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrain setup. The Active Drive II four-wheel drive system allows for selectable terrain which adjusts to the slick, sticky, or deep stuff you might find yourself in. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland is base priced at $35,500. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW 11 Ram Rebel ram rebel The Ram Rebel is a serious off-road vehicle. It maintains a full frame with independent front suspension for comfort and a solid rear axle for off-road prowess. Air suspension at all four corners provides a customized ride for great ground clearance off-road or better gas mileage on the highway. The Ram eight-speed transmission is coupled to a standout Hemi, which creates a power plant that won't quit. We wish it had lockers, but only open differentials are available in 3.92 gearing. These options are a fantastic addition to the car, giving it more credibility as an off-roader but it might be hard to imagine them ever being used. The car was spotted in a mildly camouflaged guise which shows elements of the car’s shape, which look largely unchanged since the 2012 concept. During the trailer you can also see the car’s four-wheel drive system go to work. It will share the same platform as the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga and a hybrid version will also go on sale. Prices have not yet been confirmed but it is expected to cost in excess of £200,000. BBC2 controller Patrick Holland confirmed the news at the channel’s launch of its spring and summer season. Asked if all three would be back in 2018 for what would be the show’s 25 series, he said “yes, very much so”. He added that he was delighted with the trio’s performance in the most recent series which has just aired. “The audience appreciation scores are far bigger than they were last year,” Holland said, praising the viewing figures which were consolidated at 3.4m viewers per episode. “The audience is much younger,” he added. “It has had a real growth in under 34s and under 16s. “The doubt at the beginning, the fear when a show comes back is will the audience grow to like this new presenting combo? And we are starting again this year. And I think they really have and Chris and Rory have grown and Matt has made it his own show. “We are turning over a new leaf, I think Chris and Rory have been fantastic, I think Matt has really been terrific on the films. I think he really started to enjoy the studios more and more.” As well as the main presenting trio, other more occasional Top Gear presenters including Eddie Jordan and Sabine Schmitz are also expected to be back, according to sources. The track was deemed too dangerous for competitive racing - but you can still experience the track at racing speeds in your own car. The Nürburgring (sometimes spelled Nuerburgring, particularly if you don't have the 'ü' on your computer) is most famous for being the track where Austrian racing legend Niki Lauda was involved in a fiery crash that nearly took his life during the 1976 German Grand Prix (the scene was dramatised in the 2013 movie Rush) Driving Your Own Car at the Nürburgring There are several versions of the Nürburgring track, but only two that are likely to interest you: the classic 14-mile track, called the 'Nordschleife'. Book a drive here 'Green Hell' Driving Days Jackie Stewart called the Nürburgring "The Green Hell", a phrase the track uses for its Green Hell Driving Days. However, the website is not very clear on the difference between this and the normal 'tourist rides'. I telephoned the track and they explained the only difference is the opening times: the normal tourist rides are only for a few hours (usually in the evening), and the twice-yearly, three-day Green Hell Driving Days allow you to drive all day for the duration of the event. Obviously, if want to take part in the Green Hell Driving Days, you'll probably want to stay nearby. Learn to Drive Safely Can't sell a few laps of The Nürburgring to that significant other of yours? Well, how about we look at driving from a different angle. Safety. Yes, you can really learn to handle what life throws in front of your squealing tires at the Nürburgring Driving Safety Center. A one day intensive driving course will cost a mere 130-170 Euros depending on the day and the season. C'mon, what's your life worth, anyway? I highly recommend learning to handle a car well, especially when driving in a country which offers very little distinction between a race course and a toll road. Hiking Around the Nürburgring You don't need a car to enjoy the Nürburgring. There are hiking trails all around the track. Check out the website for more details (currently only in German, though the maps are self-explanatory). How to get to The Nürburgring The Nürburgring is located 90 km southwest of Cologne or 60 km northwest of Koblenz. The nearest airports are Köln Bonn (80 km) and Duesseldorf (120 km). Be sure to follow the directions to Nürburg rather than Nürnberg. History of the Nürburgring Germany's Nurburgring opened on June 18th, 1927, as The Nürburg-Ring, a 14-mile twisty devil of a race track. It had 172 corners then, too many for a driver to remember the exact racing line through all of them. Meaning, of course, that the best racing driver could pull off amazing feats of showmanship--if he was brave enough. Take Juan Manual Fangio, for example. He quit racing a year later, as if he had reached the pinnacle and there was nowhere else to go, "I believe that on that day in 1957 I finally managed to master the Nürburgring, making those leaps in the dark on those curves where I had never before had the courage to push things so far." There is likely to never be another race track like the Nürburgring again. Looking beyond our official Top Pick list, sticking to the domestic brands can get you a really good car—but too often reliability costs them a formal recommendation. Each year, we put together a list of all-American Top Picks to not only help shoppers who favor domestic brands, but also to serve as an annual snapshot for the state of the industry. (See our 2013 and 2014 American Top Picks.) Like the official Top Picks list, highlighted models are typically the highest-scoring car in a particular category. Each vehicle also needs to have average reliability, as determined by Consumer Reports’ annual reliability survey. To keep things simple, for this list we define “domestic” as having a traditionally American nameplate, rather than digging into where the car is manufactured or who owns the brand (ahem, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). Finally, you’ll soon be wondering why the most-American of all segments is missing from this list: Pickup trucks. New competition from the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon and Ford F-150 puts our pickup truck ratings into flux. No question the Ford’s aluminum body and downsized engines are revolutionary, but only full testing will reveal how those changes truly affect the buyer. (We currently own two F-150s and a Colorado, and they are just beginning their test cycles.) Best overall: Tesla Model S That’s right: Consumer Reports’ top-scoring car is not only all-American, it’s all-electric. Real-world usable electric range makes the Model S a viable choice for many well-heeled buyers, as proven by class-leading sales figures. But the Model S isn’t just a great electric car, it’s a great car, period. Handling and ride comfort rank among the best. An innovative interior seats up to seven and has a giant, well-designed touchscreen for most controls. Continual updates from both over-the-air software and new hardware help keep the Model S out in front. Now, the addition of available all-wheel drive and advanced safety features further add appeal. (Read our complete Tesla Model S road test.) Compact car: None qualify Top-scoring: Ford Focus It’s not that Detroit can’t build a good compact car—they just aren’t reliable. The Ford Focus scores among the top small sedans, but it has poor reliability. An updated 2015 Focus goes on sale soon. While the Chevrolet Cruze is a benchmark for quietness in the class, it too proves unreliable. We don’t have enough data to say if the Dodge Dart is reliable, but frankly, it doesn’t matter. Thirsty and rough around the edges, the Dart ranks near the bottom of the class and wouldn’t make the cut, anyhow. (Read our complete Ford Focus road test.) Midsized sedan: Ford Fusion The true winner in this class is the American car buyer, who gets to pick from a deep roster of strong products from most manufacturers. This year, the Ford Fusion SE (1.5-liter) beats the Chevrolet Malibu LT by a nose. Both cars are quiet, ride well, and feel substantial. Enthusiast drivers will enjoy the Fusion’s crisper handling, but the Malibu gets better fuel economy and has easier-to-use infotainment. After a rocky start, Fusion reliability has improved and now surpasses the Malibu, tipping the balance toward the Ford. Way back in our Ratings, the bottom-scoring Chrysler 200 is left in the dust, lapped by every other car in the class. (Read our complete Ford Fusion road test.) Large sedan: Chevrolet Impala Few cars will surprise you more than the Impala. For years, the antiquated Impala was a rental car upgrade that you were better off turning down. But now the Impala is a world-beater that scores among the best cars we’ve tested. Never mind the prosaic badge; this Chevy is more luxurious than the competing Lexus ES. Top marks for ride and quietness are expected, but this big sedan also drives well. There’s nothing clumsy about it. Infotainment is straightforward and easy to use, helped by an array of traditional knobs and buttons. Priced around $40,000 fully loaded, the Impala is a great deal, too. Our biggest gripe is the relatively tiny rear window, which limits rear vision. V6 models have average reliability, so stick to those and skip the less-reliable (and less powerful) four-cylinder. (Read our complete Chevrolet Impala road test.) Sports sedan: Buick Regal Banish any lingering visions of vinyl roofs and wire wheels. The Regal is no longer aimed at blue-haired seniors; instead, it goes after blue-blooded German sports sedans. Makes sense, because this Regal is actually an Opel underneath, GM’s German marque. Teutonic ride control and sharp steering make the Regal a joy to drive. All-wheel-drive is available, as is a manual transmission. The well-trimmed interior isn’t as opulent as the best, but you’ll spend about $10,000 less for a Regal than for a BMW 3 Series or Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Reliability has been above average. (Read our complete Buick Regal road test.) Luxury car: Cadillac CTS Again shattering stereotypes, this Cadillac out-handles rivals from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Sharp and poised, the CTS entices you to take the long-and-twisty way home. Opulent interior finish and a composed ride keep the Cadillac from being a one-note athlete. First-year reliability has been above average—impressive for a clean-sheet design. One big gripe: As much as we love driving the CTS, we loathe interacting with its fiddly and unintuitive CUE infotainment system. (Read our complete Cadillac CTS road test.) Green car: Chevrolet Volt No car has ever quite beaten the Toyota Prius at its own game. Instead, the Chevrolet Volt plays by a different set of rules. The extended-range plug-in has 35 miles of electric-only range, which enables many drivers to commute gas-free. Owner satisfaction remains second only to Tesla among owners of fuel-efficient cars. Attractive leases make the high sticker price easier to swallow. A 2016 redesign promises more electric-only range, simpler controls, and a fifth seating position. Reliability of this high-tech car has been average. (Read our complete Chevrolet Volt road test.) Small SUV: None qualify Top scoring: Ford Escape If only the Ford Escape was reliable... Well-finished and nimble, we enjoy driving the Escape, especially in top Titanium trim with the optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbo four-cylinder. Thus equipped, the Escape ranks only second to the official Top Pick Subaru Forester. But below average reliability costs the Escape our nod. Competition trails far behind the Escape. Despite being all-new for 2014, the Jeep Cherokee proved disappointing in our tests, and it is the least reliable small SUV you can buy. GM’s SUV line-up suffers from Goldilocks Syndrome, with the too-small Buick Encore and new Chevrolet Trax and too-big Chevrolet Equinox/GMC Terrain failing to directly compete in this class. (Read our complete Ford Escape road test.) Midsized/large SUV: Dodge Durango Big and brawny, the Durango manages to do it all. Plushly furnished with a quiet cabin, it feels like a luxury-brand SUV inside. Surprisingly responsive handling makes this brute drive smaller than it really is. When work needs to be done, the Durango fits seven adults or can tow a hefty trailer. Fuel economy with the V6 is 18 mpg overall—decent given the size and capability. A Hemi V8 is available for those with bigger trailers to tow, along with commensurately bigger fuel budgets. Reliability remains average for the V6 version. Minivan: None qualify Top scoring: Chrysler Town and Country/Dodge Grand Caravan First to the segment, the Chrysler Town and Country/Dodge Grand Caravan are also the last American minivans left standing. Frequent discounts and attractively-priced options packages make these vans a tempting deal. No competitor has matched the clever Stow ‘n Go second-row seating, which disappears into the floor in seconds. But these vans lag behind the competition in polish, refinement, and fuel economy. Perhaps more troubling, the vans have been trouble prone every year of their model run. The low-rated reliability costs them an official place on this list. Massa will share the car with five-time champion Caca Bueno in the 2018 opener at Interlagos on March 10. Massa, who retired from F1 for the second time at the end of the 2017 season, will join Bueno's Cimed Racing team for the only race of the season where drivers share their car. The event, which opened the season from 2014 to '16, returns to the Stock Car calendar after being absent in '17. It will be the first time Massa has competed in a Brazilian championship since 1999. "I am honoured by the invitation and will be very proud to make my debut in Stock Car in double with the greatest champion in activity and my great friend, Caca Bueno," said Massa. "Cimed Racing, as the current two-time champion, is the ideal team to face a challenge like this, in an extremely competitive championship." Other guest drivers who have competed in the so-called 'Race of Doubles' include Jacques Villeneuve, Nelson Piquet Jr and Lucas di Grassi. "The Race of Doubles is one of the great moments of Stock Car and sharing the car with Felipe, after all the joys that he has provided us in F1, will be very gratifying," said Bueno. "It is a name that brings even more international visibility to our category and will certainly bring an even greater responsibility to start 2018 with many achievements." In 2010 he became the youngest ever Formula One world champion and he has held on to the title ever since. Vettel spent eight years in karts, winning the German Junior Karting Championship, Monaco Kart Cup and European Junior Karting Championship in 2001. The following year he was sixth in the Senior ICA Kart Championship and then moved into car racing. He finished second in the 2003 Formula BMW Germany championship and was top rookie. The following year, aged 17, he emphatically won the title, taking 18 wins from 20 starts and 387 points from a maximum of 400. The following season he was fifth in the Formula Three Euroseries. The championship was dominated by Lewis Hamilton and ASM – Vettel’s ASL team didn’t win a single race, though he was the top rookie. Thanks to his BMW connections Vettel made his debut as an F1 tester for the Williams team. Still aged only 18, he had to ask his school teacher for time off to do the test. The following year Vettel joined Paul di Resta at ASM but finished second to his team mate in the championship. A debut appearance in the World Series by Renault proved much more fruitful – Vettel won both races at Misano. He also appeared at the next round at Spa but badly injured his hand in a 170mph crash. His right index finger was almost severed and had to be stitched back together. BMW Sebastian Vettel helmet design, BMW, 2007 Australian Grand Prix Nonetheless Vettel joined BMW’s F1 team as a test driver and became their Friday driver after Robert Kubica was promoted to the race team in Jacques Villeneuve’s place. Vettel was fastest of all in Friday practice at his first weekend in Turkey, where not only did he also become the youngest driver to participate in a Grand Prix weekend (aged 19 years and 53 days), but he also collected a fine for speeding in the pit lane on the way to the track for the first time. 2007 He began the 2007 season racing in World Series by Renault. But when Kubica was injured during the Canadian Grand Prix Vettel stood in for him at Indianapolis and finished eighth, becoming the youngest driver to score a championship point. Kubica returned at the following round but Vettel got another chance in F1 later that year. Vettel redeemed himself at the next race in China, again in wet conditions, where he finished fourth. 2008 Even better followed in 2008, when Vettel dominated the wet Italian Grand Prix, taking pole position and leading almost all the way to win. He said afterwards: In the race itself I was surprised – you’ve just taken the chequered flag in first the race is over, and you’ve won your first Grand Prix. To start with I didn’t understand and started thinking, “What do you say at a time like this?” In the end my engineer, who’s a very quiet guy, came on the radio and told me that I’d just won the Italian Grand Prix. I turned on the radio and started talking very slowly and collectedly, thanking people. It’s dumb – you work your whole life for a moment like this and when it finally happens, you don’t know where you are. But by the end of the slow-dowm lap it clicked and then I turned the radio back on again and screamed my thanks, this time in Italian. Sebastian Vettel It was the culmination of rapid progress by the team throughout the season. Vettel had often struggled to get beyond the first lap early in the year, but the arrival of the new STR3 chassis at Monte-Carlo followed later by an engine upgrade put the team in among the front runners. Red Bull Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber, Red Bull RB5 launch, 2009 2009 By then Vettel had already been confirmed as David Coulthard’s replacement at Red Bull for 2009. But his second full season of F1 didn’t get off to a great start. While running second at Melbourne he overstepped the mark in his attempt to defend his position from Kubica and the pair collided. The steward handed Vettel a grid penalty for the next round at Malaysia, where he also failed to score. This was a setback at the beginning of a year which he ended as runner-up in the drivers’ championship. He won four times, including a dominant wet-weather victory at Shanghai, which echoed his maiden win at Monza. Later in the season the RB5 was often the car to beat and Vettel added wins at Silverstone, Suzuka and Abu Dhabi. But more lost opportunities hampered his championship ambitions: a crash at Monaco, a collision with Kimi Raikkonen at the Hungaroring, and a mistake on the first lap while leading at Istanbul. A blown engine at Valencia (his second that weekend) hindered his chances further. 2010 Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, Abu Dhabi, 2010 Red Bull carried their form into 2010 and Vettel should have won the first two races of the year. But he was hit with car problems while leading in Bahrain and Australia. He did deliver a win in Malaysia but team mate Webber seized the initiative with a series of wins at mid-season. Vettel was frustrated not just by car problems, but also some costly mistakes. He collided with Webber at Istanbul and crashed into Jenson Button at Spa-Francorchamps. But he was rarely off the front row of the grid and started ten of the 19 races from pole position. Late in the season he hit a rich vein of form, winning in Japan and Brazil and leading until his engine blew in Korea. Even so he was the third-ranked title contender heading into the season finale at Abu Dhabi. But as rivals Webber and Alonso hit trouble Vettel claimed his fifth win of the year to snatch the championship in a dramatic turn-around. 2011 Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, Suzuka, 2011 Shortly before the 2011 season began Vettel extended his contract with Red Bull until the end of 2014. The RB7 was the class of the field once again and this time Vettel used it to exert crushing superiority over his rivals. From 19 races he set pole position 15 times – a new record – and won 11 races. He wrapped up the championship with four races to spare. Vettel comprehensively out-classed team mate Webber, who scored a single win in the final race in Brazil as Vettel suffered a rare gearbox failure. This and a first-lap retirement in Abu Dhabi following a puncture were just about the only things that went wrong for Vettel as he became the first driver since Fernando Alonso in 2006 to win back-to-back world championship titles. 2012 Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, Yas Marina, 2012 Vettel successfully defended his title again in 2012 after a season-long battle with Alonso. Changes in the technical rules left Red Bull fighting a rearguard action in the opening races. Second for Vettel in the season-opener in Melbourne and victory in round four got the year off to a promising start. But while Red Bull tried to make progress with their RB8 Vettel slipped behind in the title battle and Alonso seized the initiative. A potential win in Valencia was lost due to alternator failure. At other tracks Webber had clearly got to grips with the new car more quickly. Another alternator failure in Italy cost him points in a race he had already compromised by picking up a penalty while dicing with Alonso. He made a similar mistake with Button in Germany. But Vettel’s season began to turn around after the summer break. A strong drive in Belgium produced a useful second pace finish. He collected victory in Singapore after Hamilton retired in front of him. That began a sequence of races in which he was never headed, winning four times in a row. Having taken the championship lead from Alonso, Vettel’s run of success faltered. He was sent to the back of the grid for a technical infringement in Abu Dhabi but impressively recovered to finish on the podium. Hamilton pinched victory off him in America, and he went into the final round of the championship with a 13-point margin over Alonso. This proved to be just enough after a tense final round at Interlagos in which Vettel was knocked into a spin on lap one and spent the rest of the race with a damaged car. He salvaged sixth place while Alonso could only manage second, which was sufficient for him to keep hold of the championship. 2013 Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, Buddh International Circuit, 2013 Vettel extended his run of championships in 2013 with his fourth victory in a row. The opening rounds of the championship promised a closely-fought campaign, Vettel sharing wins with Alonso and Raikkonen. Mercedes also started the season strongly, their drivers keeping Vettel from pole position more often than not in the first half of the championships. But regular podium finishes kept Vettel ahead in the points. They included a controversial win in Malaysia, where he defied his team’s order for him to stay behind Webber and passed his team mate in the final stint. After the summer break, which also coincided with a mid-season change in tyre construction which helped Red Bull, Vettel reeled off six consecutive race wins which decided the outcome of the title with three races to go. He kept on winning until the end of the season, setting a new record by taking nine consecutive grand prix victories. 2014 Vettel’s title run and race-winning streak came to an end following a major change in the technical regulations. The switch to V6 hybrid turbo engines was not one that Red Bull, and in particular its engine supplier Renault, was well-prepared for. However Vettel also struggled to get the best out of the RB11. New team mate Daniel Ricciardo fared much better, and on the occasions when the dominant Mercedes cars were beatable it was he, not Vettel, who capitalised. Vettel slipped to fifth in the championship, and his mounting frustration led him to a major career change. At the Japanese Grand Prix Red Bull announced the pair would part ways, and Vettel was eventually confirmed to be heading to Ferrari, as a replacement for Alonso. Ferrari 2015 Ferrari had endured an even less competitive 2014 campaign than Red Bull, failing to win a single race, but the team turned it around in 2015. Having rectified some of the fundamental shortcomings of their first V6 hybrid turbo, the red cars were in contention for victory much sooner than expected. And Vettel was at the vanguard. Having followed the Mercedes pair home at Melbourne he pressed them harder in Malaysia. When the silver cars made early pit stops due to a Safety Car deployment Vettel took the opportunity to lead the race, exploited the advantage of his car’s performance on softer tyres, and took a surprise win. It was not, however, the prelude to a championship bid. Mercedes were simply too strong for Vettel to consistently take points away for them. He was, however, by far their closest challenger: while new team mate Kimi Raikkonen showed his potential in China and Bahrain over the balance of the season Vettel easily handled his fellow world champion team mate. Further wins came in Hungary and Singapore: the former thanks to a scrappy performance by the Mercedes pair, the latter as the Ferrari again out-performed the Mercedes on a hot track with soft rubber. Despite a shock at Spa, where a likely podium finish disappeared when a tyre exploded, Vettel even headed Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes in the points standings until the latter stages of the year. He was ultimately forced to settle for third. But three victories and ten other podium finishes was the perfect answer to his detractors after 2014. 2016 Year two at Ferrari could only be described as a disappointment. More than that, Vettel’s growing frustration boiled over into outright anger as he neared the end of a second win-less campaign in three years. The flashpoint came in Mexico where Vettel, locked in battle with Max Verstappen, exploded with fury when the Red Bull driver refused to yield a position which Vettel had been incorrectly told he would be given. Vettel launched into a four-letter tirade aimed at race director Charlie Whiting over the radio, and swerved into Daniel Ricciardo when he came under attack from the other Red Bull. He escaped censure for the former, but the latter cost him a podium finish. This came at the end of a season which had started much more promisingly. Vettel led the first laps of the season and might have won in Australia had his team not spurned the opportunity to change his tyres during a race suspension. Having failed to do that, the Mercedes easily passed them. Another victory shot passed him by in Canada. Another flying start put him in the lead, but this time Ferrari pitted too hastily during a Virtual Safety Car period. The deployment ended suddenly, the team failed to gain the benefit from their quick pit stop, and Vettel’s lead was lost. He ended the season on the podium in Abu Dhabi, his seventh appearance of the year, but it was far less than the team had hoped for from 2016. Mr Todt, who now works as the World Automobile Federation (FIA) president, gave an emotional speech about the seven-time F1 champion as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Monday. According to the Express, Mr Todt said during the event: 'We miss Michael. He's there, still fighting. A fight is going on. Michael is someone very special, someone special for motorsport. He's special to me, he's a friend.' Sabine Kehm, his manager, added: 'We all know that Michael should be here, and I'm sure he would have loved to. And that connects him with everyone here. ' Schumacher suffered a head injury after falling and hitting his head on a rock while skiing in the French Alps in December 2013.
