Formula 1 reveals 2021 engine blueprint
F1's engine plans post-2021 outlined with increased noise, reduced costs and possibly new manufacturers on the way...
Last Updated: 01/11/17 10:16am
Formula 1 and the FIA have revealed details of the 2021 engine plans proposed to the teams.
The plans were revealed at a summit in Paris attended by the sport's governing body, the FIA, F1's owners, Liberty Media, and 'current and potential Formula One manufacturers'.
Although the roadmap outlined contains a commitment to maintaining the road relevancy of F1's power units, an intention to increasing the sound and reducing the cost of the sport's engines has also been confirmed.

Sky F1's Mark Hughes on proposed engine changes
2018 schedule and line-ups
The Formula 1 Gossip Column
As part of the proposals, F1's power units will no longer include the MGU-H component - which recovers heat energy from the turbo - but the MGU-K will be made more powerful.
In a bid to improve the sound of F1 cars, a 3000rpm higher engine running speed range will be introduced. The reduction in volume and pitch of the current era hybrid engine introduced in 2014 has been subject to heavy criticism following the noise of previous V8 and V10 generation engines.
Work will continue for another 12 months on the exact details of the engine specification, with the FIA stating "the design and development of the complete power unit will not be possible until all the information is released at the end of 2018".
The statement added: "During the remaining part of 2017 and 2018, the FIA and F1 will also work with the teams to establish power unit test and development restrictions as well as other cost containment measures."
F1's 2021 engine plans at a glance
The 2021 power unit to be a 1.6 Litre, V6 Turbo Hybrid
3000rpm higher engine running speed range to improve the sound
Prescriptive internal design parameters to restrict development costs and discourage extreme designs and running conditions
Removal of the MGU-H
More powerful MGU-K with focus on manual driver deployment in race together with option to save up energy over several laps to give a driver controlled tactical element to racing
Single turbo with dimensional constraints and weight limits
Standard energy store and control electronics
High Level of external prescriptive design to give 'Plug-And-Play' engine/chassis/transmission swap capability
Intention to investigate tighter fuel regulations and limits on number of fuels used
What's being said
F1 managing director Ross Brawn: "The 2021 power unit is an example of the future way the FIA as regulators, F1 as commercial right holders, the teams and the manufacturers as stakeholders will work together for the common good of the sport. The proposal presented today was the outcome of a series of meetings which took place during 2017 with the current teams participating in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship and the manufacturers who showed their interest to be part of the pinnacle of motor sport.
"Also, we've carefully listened to what the fans think about the current PU and what they would like to see in the near future with the objective to define a set of regulations which will provide a powertrain that is simpler, cheaper and noisier and will create the conditions to facilitate new manufacturers to enter Formula 1 as powertrain suppliers and to reach a more levelled field in the sport.
"The new F1 has the target to be the world's leading global sports competition married to state of the art technology. To excite, engage, and awe fans of all ages but to do so in a sustainable manner. We believe that the future power unit will achieve this."
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff told Auto Motor und Sport: "Certain things are right, but it's not quite there. It is a vision and not yet a regulation. And it's only their [FIA and FOM] vision and not the manufacturer's.
"It is important to define all together what Formula 1 should be in 2021, not just from the point of view of the engine. What we have is the starting point of a dialogue rather than something we have agreed to.
"The concept sounds similar to what we have now. But it means a completely new development that will mean we are working on two engines at the same time between 2018 and 2020.
"I just want to make it clear that there are different opinions. It was a presentation by the F1 management, not the manufacturer. We will now wait and see what will be put on the table next week and start a dialogue from there."
The other nine teams are yet to formally comment.

JOSE MOURINHO EXPLAINS SHUSH GESTURE AFTER MANCHESTER UNITED BEAT TOTTENHAM

Levy wouldn't sack Poch with the fringe budget he's allocated compared to the rest of the top 4, spurs are a quality team with a quality coach overachieving if anything. United look devoid of any ideas without Pogba, his influence is criminally underrated. You take Kevin out of City they are half the team, take Hazard out of Chelsea its the equivalent, the same with Pogba. All this nonsense about spurs and kane fc tell Guardiola to injure his star man and see if he's singing the same tune.

Sorry Don. If there are United fans that are not happy with Jose's work then jog on across the road. The Etihad needs people to fill up their stadium. United have accumulated too many Glory Hunters during the Fergie years and it is time that our club gets rid of the dross fans. United need fans who get behind the manager and get behind the players. New club record - unbeaten in 38 homes games. Completed the European Cup set with a trophy to spare last season. Second in the league, second most goals scored, least conceded. Qualification to knock outs of CL and SF of league cup almost secured. Who is Le Tissier???? In Jose We Trust
F1 REPORT: WHAT'S NEXT FOR LEWIS HAMILTON AFTER HIS FOURTH F1 TITLE?
AlexYoong
3h
Well done to Lewis for his win. For once it actually looked like it might be an exciting season with Vettel pulling the 2nd best car into contention. Ultimately though having the best car is vital and the Mercedes was too strong for Ferrari to sustain their challenge. Hopefully next season everyone catches up even more and we can see 3 or 4 teams in with a shout at the title.

I absolutely agree with those who believe the F1 establishment and media have a problem with the idea of Lewis being Knighted and will now conduct a smear campaign of negative stories from now until the end of the year. Most of us love him and what he is doing for British motorsport but there is definitely a lot of unwarranted and inexplicable hatred out there for him and I don't buy the attempts to blame his fans. Why is he hated so much by a section of F1 fans and the entire F1 media?

Seeing performances like that on the budget that Celtic have in comparison to their opponents really makes me proud to be a Celtic fan. What an exceptional display from the vast majority of players wearing the shirt. I was disappointed Sinclair wasn't at the races, if he was then it really could have been a result that went in our favour. Forrest, best I've ever seen him play to be honest. Tierney, exceptional as always. He will play for a top EPL side in the next 2-3 years, no doubt about it. As much as I want him in the green and white for life, these boys have ambition to be the best they can be and you can't stand in the way of that. For now though, secure the EL place and keep the party going across Europe for the bhoys.

Are we grown ups capable of dealing with reality or are we children playing make believe?Alonso claiming to be the best driver in the world is complete hogwash. If he is the best in the world why aren't the top teams breaking contracts left right and center to make sure they sign him?Ron Dennis demonstrated that baggage will be put aside for the sake of getting the best driver when he re-signed Alonso.Alonso is not being head hunted by the top teams because he's not worth the trouble and he isn't better than the top drivers. What is happening here is Alonso trying to salvage the scraps of his failed F1 career realizing he has no options left in F1 and trying to brand his transition into the F1 reject racing series as a bid for glory.

Voted the 4th best midfielder last season, a season which you were probably yelling out that he was horrible in. Was in the FifProXI the year before and still in the current FifProXI squad in 2017. You keep hating mate, but try not to predict the future, one way or another you're almost certain to look daft.

F1 CHAMPION LEWIS HAMILTON VOWS TO GET BETTER AND STILL BE DIFFERENT
RedPizza
2d
Eager to see how he actually stands up to a proper challenge next year. Let's face it, his main rival Vettel didn't exactly get the rub of the green this season, as Hamilton himself didn't last. Bottas isn't anywhere near a championship contender. The RBs are still a close work in progress coupled with Max's reliability issues. Alonso, we need say nothing about his predicament and as mush as i love Kimi, he is past his prime. Other than that who even has a car/skill even close to challenging atm? Basically it was his to lose. Next year will be the truer test. Don't be surprised if at the first whiff of a stiff challenge or an issue we see the standard Hamilton meltdown over social media, disregard for the sport and blaming everything in the world, even the toys now outside the pram. It's still a great achievement, but 4 championships do come a little easier when you're in a car head that's head and shoulders above the rest.

It's a shame that our Captain is having to think about what tactics we should be using. Bilic has had a chance but it is time he goes. In every game the whole team look like they don't know what they are supposed to be doing. I include the Spurs game in this where pure fight and detemination got us the win.
