BMW 3 Series styling While it wasn’t clear in previous spy shots, the new 3 Series will share similar styling cues with the larger 5 Series. Including more prominent signature kidney grilles and hexagonal LED lighting elements in its headlights. The lower air intake, too, has a similar wide-rectangular grille framed by silver trim pieces. The sides are visually similar to the current model with a classic ‘three-box’ layout, but are longer thanks to the car’s new CLAR platform shared with the 5 Series and 7 Series. Large alloy wheels fill the wheelarches while a small vent sits behind the front wheel to provide cooling to the brakes and break up the bodywork. Inside, the new 3 Series will be slightly larger than the outgoing one, offering more rear legroom and headroom. The slightly button-heavy dashboard will be toned down and will use the latest version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system complete with gesture control and digital dials. Build quality will be high and there’s likely to be extensive use of leather, piano black and aluminium-effect trim to brighten up the cabin. It will use the same lightweight platform found in the firm’s 5 and 7 Series models helping it save up to 80kg against the outgoing model. Electric versions, and sporty M340i models, have already been spotted testing – but the latest spy shots show what is believed to be the standard model. It appears to sit wider than the current model and should feature a new, aggressively styled front bumper, while still keeping BMW’s signature twin-kidney grille. Other BMW styling cues such as the Hofmeister kink – a curved rear pillar design seen on BMWs since the 1960s – are also expected to be found on the new model. 2018 BMW 3 Series interior Although BMW isn’t revealing much about the car’s interior – it should feature digital gauges replacing more conventional analogue ones. The firm’s latest iDrive infotainment system, with voice activation and gesture control, should also appear in this new car. 2018 BMW 3 Series engines and driving Engines should be carried over from the current car, albeit tweaked for better performance and economy. Petrol engines will probably include turbocharged 1.5-litre, 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre units, while diesel motors are expected to come in the form of turbo 1.6-litre, 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre units respectively. A plug-in hybrid variant should be offered after the car’s launched, along with a high-performance M3 model – that could debut four-wheel drive on the M3 for the first time. An all-new performance M340i model will help BMW bridge the gap between the 340i and M3 – allowing it to compete more directly with the Audi S4 and Mercedes C43 AMG. The car’s new lightweight chassis should make it marginally more nimble than the model it’ll replace and should also help improve to fuel economy.Autonomous driving tech is likely to be a core new optional feature – capable of accelerating, braking and (to some extent) steering the car independently of the driver. 2018 BMW 3 Series price and release date The G20 3 Series is expected to be revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt Motorshow in September and should go on sale in 2018, starting from around £26,000. This model is expected to be revealed as early as late 2017 before going on sale summer the following year. A number of variants have already been spotted, including a sporty M340i and what appears to be an electric variant. Images courtesy of BMWblog give us an idea of what this upcoming model may look like. 2018 BMW 3 Series G20 styling The upcoming 3 Series styling is thought to be evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, featuring the firm’s latest styling language. BMW’s signature kidney grilles will still dominate the front of the car – albeit they’ll probably grow in size compared to the current model – flanked by a pair of slim LED headlights, that might feature laser lighting in top-spec models. The front bumper design is expected to vary depending on the type of trim you opt for – luxury trims are expected to feature slim air-intakes, while M Sport models should boast large air intakes characterised by a honeycomb grille design. The rear of the car should feature taillights with L-shared LED light signatures and a sporty bumper design with a different exhaust design depending on the model variant. It is thought that the prototypes dimensions are very close to the final productions car suggesting that the 3 Series should be neatly proportioned featuring small overhangs, making it just as good looking as the model it replaces. The new 3 Series’ cabin is expected to look more modern than the outgoing version 2018 BMW 3 Series G20 interior The new 3 Series should feature a plush cabin with an array of available technology a premium touches. A more sports focused interior would offer supportive seats, a thick bolstered steering wheel and red interior trim. Interior spyshots suggest that the upcoming 3 Series could feature digital gauges replacing more traditional analogue ones with a headup display function, a feature found in the current 5 Series and 7 Series. BMW’s iDrive infotainment system with gesture control should also be present along with a range of interior trim choices – depending on the trim selected. 2018 BMW 3 Series G20 engines The current engine range of turbocharged petrol, diesel engines and electric variants should remain albeit slightly tweaked. Entry-level motors will take the form of 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, while sportier 3.0-litre engines will also be on offer. We expect that BMW will offer a plug-in hybrid and possibly an electric version of the 3 Series at some point in its lifespan. All models are expected to be offered with an 8-speed auto gearbox. The car will use BMW’s CLAR platform, making it both lighter and stiffer than the current generation – some sources suggesting as much as 80kg – this will aid the car’s handling and fuel-efficiency. A performance M340i model might be a new addition to the lineup, filling the gap between the 340i and the high-performance M340i. This will be the first time that BMW has offered a ‘M performance’ car in the 3 Series range – allowing it to compete more directly with the Audi S4 and Mercedes C43 AMG. 2018 BMW 3 Series G20 price and release date The G20 3 Series may debut in the second half of 2017 at the Frankfurt Motorshow in September.
