By LUKE JOHN SMITH 08:28, Fri, Sep 8, 2017 | UPDATED: 11:29, Thu, Sep 21, 2017 Volvo XC40 PH Volvo XC40 will be the safest car in its segment, claims the Swedish manufacturer Volvo’s next car will be the XC40, a compact SUV that will join the XC60 and XC90 in the company’s line-up. Over the past few weeks Volvo has released some details about the car’s design style and completely revolutionised interior. The Swedish manufacturer has also made a big announcement about the new car which is that it will be the safest vehicle in its segment. It’s a substantial claim but given how safe the XC90 and XC60 are, they’ve got a reason to be fairly confident in its ability. Volvo says that they have achieved these goals by incorporating technology design for the XC90/XC60 into the XC40 despite its reduced size. XC40 is built on a different smaller platform to the XC90/XC60 called the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). It will benefit from Volvo’s City Safety but also a new piece of technology which detects potential accidents with other cars, cyclists and pedestrians and can slow the vehicle down. Other safety equipment onboard includes Volvo on Call which automatically alerts the authorities in case of an accident, Pilot Assist, City Safety system, Run-off Road Protection and Mitigation. With the XC40, we aim to reduce the so-called cognitive load on the driver Malin Ekholm, Vice President Volvo Cars Safety Centre “With the XC40, we aim to reduce the so-called cognitive load on the driver. “While our safety and driver-assistance systems actively identify and mitigate potential conflicts, you as a driver can relax more and therefore enjoy city driving.” Volvo’s XC40 City Safety package has been calibrated to keep the driver awake and alert and reduce the threat of a potential accident, a feature which is already fitted onboard the Xc60, XC90, S90 and V90. “Many accidents are caused by ‘mismatch moments’, when you glance over your shoulder, or look at the instruments just as someone else walks out in the road, and this is where we can make a difference,” said Tent Victor, Volvo’s Senior Technical Leader for Crash Avoidance. The Xc40 is likely to cost from £20,000 when it launches in a few months.
